Mission of the Center

The center's mission aligns with the vision, philosophy, and objectives of Algerian universities, particularly those of the University of El Oued, focusing on:

  • Supporting university students comprehensively by providing resources and services that facilitate the educational process and foster cognitive, emotional, and social development.

  • Offering counselling, guidance, psychological support, and care to help students understand their needs, make informed decisions, and plan their future in line with their abilities and available opportunities. This aims to promote academic, psychological, educational, professional, and social compatibility for university students while adhering to Algerian societal values and international ethical standards of psychological practice.

  • Serving as a key resource for faculty and staff by facilitating support services for students through consultation sessions, educational programs, and preventive strategies..

Introducing the centre

The University Psychological Assistance Center at the University of El Oued, was established under the directive of the Secretary General of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, letter No. 391-AG-2019 dated March 13, 2019. It was officially inaugurated by University Decision No. 05/G.W./2019 issued on March 22, 2021. The center is located on the second floor of the Faculty of Social Sciences building.      

Objectives of the Center

  • Provide therapeutic interventions and consultations for students facing psychological issues and disorders
  • Contribute to the early detection of psychological problems as a preventive measure.
  • Support the rehabilitation of certain disabilities in line with the center's capabilities.
  • Raise awareness within the university community about the importance of student mental health through conferences, seminars, and workshops.
  • Enhance the center's capabilities by providing psychological and social assessments, tests, and guidance forms.
  • Deliver preventive and developmental counseling through lectures, awareness brochures, and educational leaflets addressing student concerns.
  • Publish a scientific journal specialized in counseling and psychotherapy.
  • Organize scientific conferences and seminars while exchanging knowledge with Algerian, Arab, and international psychological assistance centers.
  • Supervise internships for clinical psychology and speech therapy students.
  • Conduct specialized training sessions for psychological practitioners at university residences.
  • Prepare regular reports on student health and use them in scientific research.

Responsibilities of the Center

  • Maintain the confidentiality of all students benefiting from its services.
  • Ensure the best possible counseling and psychological consultation services for all students without exception.
  • Foster communication between the university, parents, and families of students requiring guidance and counseling when necessary.

 

Rights of Beneficiaries

Privacy:

Beneficiaries have the right to voluntarily disclose personal or confidential information to qualified counselors. Psychologists may request information to aid in diagnosing issues, fostering a relationship of trust, understanding, and empathy.

Confidentiality:

Confidentiality refers to the safeguarding of all information provided by the beneficiary. Such information cannot be disclosed to anyone without the student’s explicit written consent, except in cases where the beneficiary or others are at risk of harm.

These exceptions are defined by professional ethics and Islamic principles. Cases include:

  • When the student poses a danger to themselves.
  • When the student poses a danger to others or property.
  • When the information is required by law.
  • In cases where the information is essential for providing appropriate medical or psychological care. The center’s director or an authorized delegate will release the information to the relevant authority..

Individual Freedom:

The beneficiary has the freedom to set their own goals and work towards achieving them within the ethical framework of the profession and university regulations. No staff member at the center may impose goals or methods on the beneficiary. The counseling process must respect the individuality of the beneficiary, supporting their self-understanding and helping them achieve their personal objectives.
