University of El Oued Commemorates the Demonstrations and Massacres of May 8, 1945
Within the framework of the cultural and scientific activities of the student organizations of the University of El Oued and in coordination with the sub-directorate of activities, the directorate of Mujahideen, the directorate of Youth and Sports, and the Directorate of Culture, the University of El Oued commemorated today, May 4, 2023, under the supervision of the University’s Rector Professor Omar Farhati, represented by the General Union of Algerian Students, the anniversary of the demonstrations and massacres of May 8, 1945, at the Mediatheque Hall. The event was attended by the Vice-Rector of the University in charge of pedagogy, Professor Bachir Menaï, the Vice-Rector of the Wilaya People’s Assembly, Farès Belabes, the supervision of Professor Kaceiba Rachid, the Dean of the Faculty of Exact Sciences, Professor Abdelwahab Mansour, the Head of Information and Communication at the University, Dr. Raqiq Abdallah, the President of the Wilaya Office of Omar Lamouchi, and a group of university students and members of the student organization.
In his opening speech, the Vice-Rector of the University thanked the attendees and praised the activity of the student organization and all the organizations and students of the University of El Oued for commemorating the anniversary and highlighting the sacrifices of the martyrs so that we can enjoy independence and freedom. The Vice-Rector of the Wilaya People’s Assembly also focused in his speech on the role of students and young people in preserving Algeria, the nation, and the homeland, and to sanctify the sacrifices of the Algerians with their knowledge, diligence, and service to the nation and its preservation, praising this important activity in our national memory.
Professor Rachid Kaceiba gave a historical lecture in which he highlighted the savagery of the French colonizer and occupier in dealing with an unarmed people who wanted to achieve their independence like other peoples, but the response was with the killing and massacres of May 8, 1945, which claimed more than 80,000 martyrs. The professor concluded his lecture, with the interaction of the audience, on the importance of these events and that the historical memory of the nation is carried by its sons in their conscience and their scientific and cultural life.
The two-day program of the event includes many activities:
- A visit to the Mujahideen Museum with the students in the morning.
- Organizing scientific sessions and meetings in different university residences supervised by the Wilaya Executive Office.
- Organizing scientific meetings with the attendance of the Mujahideen of the General Union of Algerian Students and the participation of all university students, with the participation of the Directorate of Mujahideen, and honoring a number of the Mujahideen of the Wilaya and its symbols, and organizing a historical exhibition.
At the end of the event, the President and members of the General Union of Algerian Students presented awards and honors to all contributors and participants.
