On October 3, 2023, the Rector of the University of El Oued, Professor Omar Ferahti, chaired an evaluation meeting on university ranking, visibility, and the use of technology in teaching.

The meeting was attended by the Vice-Rector of the University, the Deans of the Faculties, their vices for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research, the Director of the Medical Annex, the Secretary General of the University, the Sub Director of Means and Maintenance, the Head of the Network Service, and the members of the Local Committee for Monitoring the Ranking and Visibility of the University.

The University Rector opened the meeting by stressing the importance of ranking and visibility in raising the university to the level of world universities. He pointed out the importance of evaluating the ranking and visibility of the University of El Oued and studying the strengths and adressing the weaknesses and trying to overcome them.

Professor Tir Zoheir gave a presentation on the international ranking of universities and the scientific criteria used in this ranking, the impact ranking, the data entry schedule, the visibility improvement strategy, and the use of freelance platforms and social media platforms. Professor Tir Zoheir explained that the University of El Oued’s failure to enter the Times Higher Education (THE) ranking is due to its failure to meet the minimum requirement of obtaining 1,000 scientific articles in the last five years in Scopus, with a minimum of 150 articles per year.

Dr. Ben Seghir Bachir also gave a presentation on the criteria of the Spanish Webometrics Matrix for the visibility and ranking of universities, which is based on several criteria, including the vision and scientific publications of the last three years in Google Scholar. He also gave an assessment of the university’s website performance and the technical problems observed.

For his part, Dr. Attia Abdelmalek gave a presentation on the QS university ranking criteria, which is an annual report that ranks more than 30,000 universities around the world, ranked and compared according to academic and scientific criteria based on the structural framework of universities.

The meeting also addressed the issue of the use of technology in teaching, where the Deans of the Faculties gave presentations on the extent to which these modern means are used in pedagogical activities, such as interactive whiteboards and smart screens. The University Rector stressed the need for the full generalization of the use of technology in all classrooms and the final disposal of traditional teaching methods.

The meeting was marked by extensive discussions and the presentation of several proposals to improve ranking and visibility. The University Rector also formed a technical committee to follow up on the impact ranking and visibility of the university, evaluate it, and identify the strengths and weaknesses to address them in order to raise the university to the international level.
