Doctoral Thesis Defense by a Mauritanian Student at El Oued University
On May 9, 2023, the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at the University of El Oued hosted the doctoral thesis defense of Mohammedou Ould Hemr, a student from Mauritania. His dissertation, titled “Waqf Urbanism in the Islamic West Between the 5th and 9th Centuries AH / 11th and 15th Centuries CE: A Study Through Legal Cases and Archaeological Evidence,” showcased a significant scholarly contribution.
The session was attended by the university’s Rector, Professor Omar Farhati, and the Vice-Rector for External Relations, Professor Qadda El Habib, underscoring the institution’s dedication to supporting international students. This thesis marked a milestone as it was the first fully digital dissertation at the university, aligning with the Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research’s commitment to paperless practices.
Following an enriching discussion, the doctoral committee awarded the student his degree with the highest distinction, “Très Honorable,” along with a recommendation for publication. This achievement highlights the University of El Oued’s commitment to fostering academic excellence and providing international students with opportunities to thrive.

Collective Iftar with Local Authorities and International Students at El Oued University
On April 12, 2023, the University Services Directorate of El Oued organized a communal iftar at the Saleh Hadae residence to honor international students and female students of the university. The event was graced by the presence of the Wali (Governor) of the province, Saïd Akhrouf, along with the Vice President of the People’s Provincial Assembly, Fares Belbassi, the Rector of the University, Professor Omar Farhati, and the Director of University Services, Mr. Jamal Quresha. Also in attendance were various officials, including the Director of Mujahideen Affairs, the Chief of the El Oued District, the Mayor of El Oued, and representatives from the university’s academic and administrative teams, along with student organizations and media representatives.
After the meal, the Wali and the Rector engaged in friendly discussions with the students in a warm and festive Ramadan atmosphere. During the event, the attending media captured statements from the Wali, the Vice President of the People’s Provincial Assembly, the Rector, and the Director of University Services. They expressed their satisfaction with the living and educational conditions provided for the students, which were described as excellent by both officials and the students themselves.
“Student Marhaba Day” Welcomes International Students at El Oued University
On November 14, 2023, the University of El Oued hosted its annual “Student Marhaba Day,” an initiative dedicated to welcoming international students in accordance with ministerial directives. The event was presided over by the Rector of the University, Professor Omar Farhati, and took place at the Faculty of Arts and Languages, honoring students from Uzbekistan, Yemen, and Mauritania. The event was attended by the Rector’s deputies, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Languages, university staff, and representatives from the University Services Directorate.
In his welcoming address, Professor Farhati emphasized the significance of this occasion as a celebration of the shared cultural and historical bonds between Algeria and these nations. He encouraged the international students to embrace their educational journey at the university, wishing them a successful and enriching experience. Additionally, he highlighted Algeria’s values of love and peace, urging the students to convey a positive image of the country during their time at El Oued University.
