L'Université d'El Oued commémore les massacres du 17 octobre 1961
On the morning of October 17, 2023, the university community of the University of El Oued commemorated the events of the October 17, 1961 massacres in France, in which Algerian martyrs sacrificed their lives for the liberation of the homeland when they staged demonstrations demanding independence and were met by the colonial forces with torture, abuse, and being thrown alive into the Seine River.
The commemorative event, which was organized in front of the memorial at the University of El Oued at 11:00 am, was led by the Vice-Rector of the University, Professor Boubaker Mansour, and was attended by the Deans of Faculties, Secretaries-General of Faculties, professors, student organizations, staff, and the University’s Media and Communication Cell.
On behalf of the Rector of the University of Shahid Hamou Lakhder-El Oued, Professor Omar Farhati, the Vice-Rector of the University delivered a speech on the occasion in which he paid tribute to the souls of the martyrs of the October 17, 1961 demonstrations against French colonialism. He said that sacrifice is the path to freedom and that the Algerian Revolution taught the world the meanings of freedom and pride. He also pointed out that commemorating this historic anniversary reminds us of the heroism of our martyrs who have immortalized their names in all international forums.
The commemorative event for the martyrs of October 17, 1961 was opened by the University’s Media and Communication Officer, Dr. Abdallah Raqiq, with a welcoming speech in which he stressed that the October 17 demonstrations represent one of the heroic acts of our people and a golden historical page in the record of the achievements of our great revolution. He said that it is further proof of the cohesion of the Algerian people with the National Liberation Army.
This was followed by listening to the national anthem, a minute of silence for the souls of the martyrs, and the recitation of the Fatiha by Professor Ibrahim Rahmani in memory of the martyrs.
On the occasion, Dr. Abdelkader Azzam Awadi, a professor of history, gave a historical speech in which he highlighted the importance of the events of October 17, 1961, which was established as a National Day of Migration. He explained that this glorious date brings to mind the extent of the brutality of the ruthless colonizer in suppressing the Algerian demonstrators and throwing them into the Seine River in Paris. This event shook the foundations of France at the time and was supported by all peace- and freedom-loving countries, leading to widespread international solidarity with the Algerian cause.
